Video Production
Why should the
church use video?
And, even more importantly, why should we begin spending church money
on it?
This is a reasonable
question. A pastor friend of mine pointed out that it only costs a few
dollars day to keep a pastor (and his family) in India preaching the gospel.
In that light, why not put the video budget into direct missions. Good
point. But the same can be said of most other church budget items. Why
not put all of our money into missions?
I agree, we need to put much more money into missions - plus we need to
fund more video ministries in the church. Here are some reasons.
Reason #1
"Make known among the nations what God has
done"
(Psalm 105:1).
What better way to
take an important message to the world? Even with most of the focus on
the growth of the Internet, television is still king.
Sales of TVs and VCRs are still growing rapidly in developing countries.
And in the northern hemisphere less than 30% of the population own a computer,
while more than 90% have a television.
This means that communicating through broadcast television and the distribution
of videos will get the message to the most people. The "Jesus Movie"
is now distributed in most countries of the world, and several missionaries
have been arrested for possessing copies of the movie for distribution.
Even the persecuting authorities know the power of media.
Reason #2
"And
Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptian's and he was mighty
in his words and deeds" Acts 7:22 (RSV)
This is easy. When
we want to communicate in a certain culture, we must use the language
of the culture. And, like it or not, the language of this post-modern
world is television and the mass media.
To be relevant to those around us we must learn the tools. These are the
same tools that the entertainment industry and corporations have used
for years to market their ideas.
Everyone under the age of 50 has been impacted by television. We all know
the power of media on our lives. Even with this knowledge we continue
to do church in the same way we did 100 years ago.
How do we use video
effectively?
There are
many ways. We can use video in worship, video clips to enhance sermons,
video that tell stories of what God is doing in the church community,
(Psalm 105:1) and we can produce a short video to give to visitors to
tell them what the church is all about.
But there is a cost.
Getting into and other new media will require money as well as a commitment
to train up our young people in the technical and creative media arts.
It won't happen overnight - we can't expect to produce world-impacting
programs right away - but we can start the process. The sooner we start,
the better.
